The second session of A School Called Tribe, on Tuesday, 22 October 2024, was entirely dedicated to words.

Under the guidance of the coaches, the participants worked on the theme “Stories in bars”: how to transform personal experiences, dreams and anger into musical verses.

Through writing exercises and peer feedback, rappers and spoken word poets began writing the first drafts of their lyrics, while jazz students from the conservatory improvised melodic lines to accompany them.

Some groups decided to work together, combining the power of the beat with the unpredictability of live sound.

During the second part of the session, words became rhythm: people read, sang and rapped their lyrics accompanied by a jazz trio consisting of piano, bass and drums.

A continuous dialogue between urban language and improvisation, between writing and the body.

‘When we play together, my voice moves differently. It’s as if the words breathe in time with the bass,’ said one of the participants.

The evening ended with a collective cypher — everyone in a circle, microphone in the centre — which enshrined the true spirit of the project: collaboration, respect and creative freedom.

Next meeting: 29 October, dedicated to “Playing live”, where the words will meet the full band for the first ensemble rehearsals.
